This course uses continuous assessment (assignments + project). There is no sit-down exam.
Components and weights
- Homework assignments (3–4 total): 50%
- Final project: 40%
- Active participation: 10%
Homework assignments
- The homework assignments are practical coding/reporting tasks.
- Unless stated otherwise, homework deliverables are submitted as Quarto source files (
.qmd) that render successfully. - Homeworks may require analysis of provided datasets, clean R code, model diagnostics, and written interpretation of results.
Final project
- Submit one Quarto source file (
.qmd) via the course page. - The
.qmdmust include both the analysis code and the final written interpretation. - The
.qmdmust render without errors from a fresh R session (nosetwd(), no absolute paths, reproducible data access). - You will also present the project during the final workshop (Week 15). Presentation materials are separate and do not replace the
.qmdsubmission.
Active participation
Participation is graded based on constructive engagement during workshops.
What counts as active participation
You earn participation credit by doing the following consistently:
- Attend and be prepared: you have R, RStudio, and Quarto working and you can follow along with the live coding.
- Do the in-class work: you make a good-faith attempt to complete the in-class exercises (code + short answers).
- Engage constructively: you ask/answer questions, explain your approach when asked, and contribute to group problem solving.
- Professional collaboration: you help peers debug/understand concepts (without sharing finished solutions verbatim).
Participation is not graded on being “right”; it is graded on effort, engagement, and professional workshop behavior.
If you miss a class (make-up participation)
If you are absent, you can recover participation credit by:
- Completing the in-class lab for that week on your own, and
- Providing your completed work (as a rendered report and source) using the method and deadline specified by the instructor (e.g., via the course page or by email).
Grading scale
- 0–50%: 2 (Fail)
- 51–60%: 3 (Satisfactory)
- 61–70%: 3.5 (Satisfactory+)
- 71–80%: 4 (Good)
- 81–90%: 4.5 (Good+)
- 91–100%: 5 (Very Good)
Late work and retakes
- Homeworks: late submissions may be penalized. Failed assignments may be corrected and resubmitted within a specified timeframe (e.g., 2 weeks) for a capped grade.
- Final project eligibility: completion of all homework assignments is required before submitting the final project.
- Final project: if the project is failed, the student must submit a revised version or a new analysis within the retake session period.
